Project:

   ROHANA SCHOOL RENOVATION

  Ahangama Area, Sri Lanka

We helped to renovate and create an new educational program at the Rohana School for the Deaf and Blind.

This 80 year old school had never been renovated. Before this renovation the children lived in appalling conditions with holes in the floors for toilets, slept on dirty mattresses with no fans in very unsanitary conditions. The staff was not concerned with the welfare of the children and treated them poorly. They were not trained in sign language and there were no books available in Braille, so the children were not able to learn anything.

Mari traveled to the school to attend the grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting ceremony in February 2006. Thanks to our help the children have an entirely new life. They have a beautiful and clean school, new modern bathrooms and cheerfully decorated bedrooms. Most importantly, they also have a caring skilled staff to take care of them, trained teachers, Braille books, computers, hearing aids and other needed equipment.

Project:

The Art Farm provides funding for the Children's Resource Center.

Hambantota lost over 40% of its population as a result of the December 2004 Tsunami, and over 80% of the children in this town lost a relative on that dreadful day. It was market day and most women were down by the beach selling their goods when the giant wave came and washed inland about one kilometer. In 2006 when Mari was there visiting it looked to her as though the Tsunami had just hit. The disaster was everywhere. Boats were stranded next to the road, buildings were leveled and a wrecked train was still sitting on the tracks.

Because of the overwhelming scale of the disaster the government has been overwhelmed and has not been able to adequately address all of the pressing issues caused by the Tsunami. The Childrens Resource Center was founded on July 1st, 2005 with funding from Rebuilding Sri Lanka to assist traumatized children and adults in the needy districts of Ambalantota and Hambantota.

This one of a kind program offers an after school program, preschool, one to one counseling, arts education, English and computer classes. This community center is dedicated to improving the lives of these children and providing them with hope and support for the future. (www.crclanka.com/crc for further information)

Mari's Children donated their funds from 2005 to the Center in order to keep their doors open. Because the CRC is funded solely by donations, additional funds are needed to keep this wonderful program available to the community.
